Tips on Having a Successful Big Day

Alarm clock

Do you ever wake up in the morning in a panic that you are not going to be able to get ready in time, or gather up all your things, before heading out the door? I think we can all relate to that.

Our mornings are super chaotic. We have four people trying to get ready for work and school at the same time. Only having one bathroom doesn’t help matters either.

My kids are the ones who tend to misplace things or forget things more often than my husband and I. Most mornings my daughter’s dresser looks like it exploded because there are clothes every where. In effort to find the “perfect” outfit and/or accessories she tears the place apart. It would help immensely if her dressers were neat and organized to begin with. She just shoves things into the drawers. There is no “rhyme or reason” as to where her stuff is. For example, instead of having a drawer for tops and a drawer for bottoms all here things are just randomly shoved into the drawers (not even folded!).

Our son is just as bad. He might be able to get dressed and ready quick enough, but he frequently forgets to put things in his backpack. Many times I find myself dropping off books, homework, flashcards and other things at school because he left them at home.

#BigDay

I encourage my kids to get prepared the night before by laying out what they want to wear and making sure their backpacks are ready with all their necessary school work, books and whatever else they might need. This is especially important if they have something “big” going on the next day like an important test or presentation. When you prepare the night before a big day, you set yourself up to have a better tomorrow.

I lead by example. I like to set out my clothes for the following day as well as make sure the tote bag I bring to work with me is ready to go. My tote bag includes my purse, cellphone charger, cellphone, spare glasses and miscellaneous “must haves” (hand lotion, aspirin, lip balm…).

The same applies to breakfast. When setting yourself up for success it’s important to include a healthy, nutritious and tasty breakfast too. For example, a bowl of your favorite Kellogg’s cereal and milk. Or in my case Kellogg’s cereal with a glass of milk (I don’t like milk in my cereal). Some great options that are full of protein and grains include Kellogg’s Frosted Mini Wheats, Special K or Raisin Bran.

When planning for the day ahead by getting your outfit ready, packing your bag or backpack and setting your alarm (don’t forget to do that), don’t forget to plan ahead for the next day’s breakfast. Just like your clothes and important things, you can easily set out a box of cereal and your favorite bowl and spoon. Why not think about you morning cereal the night before? It makes sense to plan ahead. It makes the morning routine so much easier and more efficient.

#Tomorrow

Here are some additional tips from Dr. Travis Stork, star of the TV show “The Doctors,” for Having a Successful Big Day.

  • Lay out your clothes the night before to help streamline your morning routine.
  • Create a “must achieve” list for the morning to help yourself stop stressing about those tasks at night, leading to a more restful night’s sleep.
  • Plan out what to have for breakfast, and nothing is easier than setting out a bowl and spoon for a quick, nutritious and tasty bowl of cereal in the morning.
  • If you’re travelling or on-the-go, making sure to pack a nutritious snack (like a baggie of cereal) in your bag to help you avoid hitting the mid-morning lull and picking something unhealthy.
